Remarkable recent achievements in mine action demonstrated the United Nations’ ability to “deliver as one,” delegates in the Fourth Committee (Special Political and Decolonization) heard today as they concluded their consideration of assistance in mine action, with the approval of a draft resolution on that topic.


UAE Supports Demining Operations in Kandahar, Afghanistan

(October, Afghanistan) Kandahar Province, one of the most rugged, rural areas of Afghanistan, is also one of the country’s most mine-contaminated areas. UNMAS estimates that nearly 26,000 inhabitants of Kandahar Province live within 500 meters of a minefield. In 2011, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) allocated US$25.8 million to assist Afghanistan’s development by supporting demining operations in Kandahar.


A Future for Peace: UNMAS celebrates UN Day in DRC

(24 October 2013, Kinshasa, DRC) UN Day celebrates the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter. With the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, the United Nations was officially created.   Today, representatives from the UN Country Team, the UN Mission; MONUSCO, ambassadors,  members of the Government, along with children from nearby schools, gathered at the UNDP Headquarters in Kinshasa, DRC to celebrate United Nations Day 2013.
