UN Salutes the New Convention on Cluster Munitions
Max Kerley, Director of the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS), expressed his satisfaction about the new Convention on Cluster Munitions in New York. "This is a major step for the global disarmament agenda. Cluster munitions cause considerable humanitarian and socio-economic damage, as witnessed by UNMAS in numerous countries and territories."

Global Conference on Cluster Munitions
The first international meeting on cluster bombs since the 2008 treaty banning the weapon was signed was held in Santiago, Chile on 7 - 9 June 2010. More than 80 governments and 125 campaigners including cluster bomb survivors participated in the hosted by the government of Chile and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).This key conference laid the groundwork for the upcoming First Meeting of States Parties to the Convention, which will take place from 8-12 November in Lao PDR, the most heavily affected country. More than 125 representatives of non-governmental organisations from some 50 countries in all regions of the world attended the conference under the banner of the Cluster Munition Coalition to ensure that governments keep their promises and to urge as many states as possible to get on board the ban treaty this year.

Diplomatic Conference for the Adoption of a Convention on Cluster Munitions Dublin 19-30 May 2008. The Convention, agreed by 110 States at a diplomatic conference in Dublin, prohibits the use, production, stockpiling and transfer of these weapons. It commits States to the clearance of areas contaminated with unexploded cluster munitions and to the provision of assistance for victims and their communities.
