    UNMAS in South Sudan

    South Sudan

UNMAS was first established in 2004, in what is now South Sudan. UNMAS undertakes clearance tasks, both manual and mechanical, of large areas of land and of roads where there is a possibility that landmines are present as well as conducting spot tasks and battle area clearance to remove unexploded ordnance after conflict.

UNMAS further uses explosive detection dogs (EDD) and mine detection dogs (MDD) as part of its operations in South Sudan. EDDs provide an extra layer of security for internally displaced persons (IDPs), humanitarian actors, and United Nations personnel, who reside and work on the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) bases. MDDs assess areas after survey and clearance by metal detectors and ground penetrating radar.

This photo exhibition is the result of a month-long consultancy that was undertaken by Ms. Martine Perret, a professional photographer, in February and March 2017. During this period, she travelled to locations in and around Bentiu and Juba, to document mine action operations as well as the civilians impacted by these operations.

    Colombia

From 27th June to 6th July, Mr. Joakim Berlin, the global expert in Explosive Detection Dogs (EDDs) visited Colombia. His visit, organized by UNMAS with the National Authority and the Organization of American States, included various activities among which: visit to the EDD facilities of the Armed Forces in Tolemaida where among others, a demonstration of the armed forces EDDs was arranged. Joakim also visited the area of operations of HALO Trust in Antioquia, in order to see the characteristics and challenges of EDD deployment  in clearing operations in Colombia. He participated in a technical workshop on EDDs with all relevant mine action stakeholders. The workshop was a great space for dialogue between civilian and military operators with the National Authority on prospects for the use of EDDs in Colombia. Joakim also visited the EDD accreditation area and gave recommendations on its design, and the procedures necessary to assess the operational capacity of organizations. He further gave EDD training recommendations to both military and civilian operators and assisted the National Authority with the construction of national standards.

Ambassador of Italy in Sudan Visits Mine Action activities in the field

    Sudan (excluding Darfur)

On 20th June 2016, Mr.  Fabrizio Lobasso, the Ambassador of Italy in Sudan, visited mine clearance operation in Talkok locality, Kassala state of Sudan. The Ambassador appreciated the humanitarian work UNMAS and its partner does in Sudan. He mentioned that he has now a practical story about the Mine Action work which he can tell other donors and to convince them to come forward and contribute to this rather important humanitarian work we do in Sudan.

The mine clearance operation in Talkok locality, Kassala commenced in May 2016, is funded by the Government of Italy through UNMAS earlier this year and implemented by National Units for Mine Action and Development (NUMAD).  It is to note that Italian funded project in Talkok is the first clearance operation since the re-engagement of UNMAS in Sudan in April 2015. This funding enables UNMAS and NMAC to clear the remaining known Hazards in Talkok locality which will be a further step for Sudan towards being Ottawa compliance. The funding also supports risk education operation in Kassala and non technical survey operation in Red Sea.

(May 2015) A United Nations Mine Action Service team conducts a Quality Assurance mission to a mine clearance site operated by one of its contractors. At the time of the visit the contractor, MineTech International, had been working on clearing a site near Aru Junction in Central Equatoria for 8 days. Some local citizens had discovered an anti-tank mine and two anti-personnel mines while clearing land used for making charcoal. After a community liaison team was alerted to their presence by the community, UNMAS tasked MineTech with the site’s clearance, conducted with a MineWolf and by manual clearance methods.

Once cleared by MineTech the site will be turned back over to UNMAS, who in turn will notify the government, landowners, and the surrounding community that it is safe to return to and begin working again.

Afghanistan Marks International Mine Awareness Day 2015

    Afghanistan

(April 2015) To raise awareness about landmines and progress toward their eradication, Afghans and their international partners marked Mine Awareness Day at a United Nations-backed event in which speeches were delivered and demonstrations given on demining procedures. The theme for this year’s day, “More than Mines,” is designed to raise awareness about the reality faced by civilians, humanitarians, peacekeepers and development agencies in war-zones and countries recovering from conflict. When explosive hazards block the way, food is not delivered; refugees and internally displaced people cannot safely return home; children cannot go to school; and development and peacebuilding efforts are hindered.

Marco Grob: Combating the Scourge of Landmines in Afghanistan

    Afghanistan

More than one million people in Afghanistan are affected by landmines and explosive remnants of war. Over forty people are killed or injured every month. In February 2011, TIME photographer Marco Grob went to Afghanistan to support the work of the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS). To bring attention to the problems — farmers are unable to plant in contaminated fields; women are unable to access water because surrounding areas are mined; citizens can’t rebuild on land because of the danger of explosion — UNMAS approached TIME’s Marco Grob, known best for his portraiture work, to photograph the impact of landmines and explosive remnants of war on Afghans.Improvising a studio on a former battlefield near one of the country’s most densely contaminated minefields, Grob and his team found the snow and wind a challenge — forcing them to enlist the aid of one of the UN mine clearers, who held a reflector over subjects’ heads to keep the snow off them. When approaching each subject, Grob says, he didn’t want to showcase their injuries. “I choose to concentrate on their faces and the textures of Afghanistan.”Grob, a former soldier in the Swiss army who was trained in laying mines, says his work is far from over. Funding — which is used to train and employ 15,000 men across Afghanistan, providing livelihoods while cleaning up communities — is the only obstacle to ridding Afghanistan of mines. With donations, Afghanistan could be cleared of mines in years instead of decades. “I hope my work helps to raise awareness,” says Grob, “and will help keep the required money flowing.”Photos by Marco GrobWatch the video "UN through the Lens: Combating the Scourge of Landmines in Afghanistan" http://bit.ly/nXAU43

International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action 4 April 2013

On 8 December 2005, the General Assembly declared that 4 April of each year shall be observed as the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action.

It called for continued efforts by States, with the assistance of the United Nations and relevant organizations, to foster the establishment and development of national mine-action capacities in countries where mines and explosive remnants of war constitute a serious threat to the safety, health and lives of the civilian population, or an impediment to social and economic development at the national and local levels.

Marco Grob: Through the Lens - South Sudan

    South Sudan

After decades of war South Sudan is contaminated with thousands of deadly unexploded bombs and landmines. These explosives threaten the lives and livelihoods of South Sudan’s inhabitants, and are still an impediment to development, peace and stability.  Emmy award-winning photographer Marco Grob travels to South Sudan to photograph the Mundari tribesmen as they roam vast plains in search of grazing land for their cattle.  Here is an inside look into the creation of these stunning photographs.

Marco has worked with UNMAS since 2010, and has taken portraits of mine action work in Afghanistan, Cambodia and South Sudan.
