Treaties and Law

Several international agreements regulate or ban the use of landmines and explosive remnants of war. These instruments are a part of the body of international humanitarian law which seeks to limit the effects of armed conflict for humanitarian reasons.  The corpus of international human rights law outlines the rights of persons affected by these weapons.

The United Nations engagement in mine action is guided by relevant international law and it actively promotes full adherence to and compliance by States and parties to armed conflict, where applicable, with relevant treaties and international instruments, in particular the anti-personnel mine ban treaty, the convention on conventional weapons and international human rights instruments. It is the policy of the United Nations in mine action to contribute to the United Nations larger efforts to help ensure compliance with relevant resolutions and international legal norms and standards [see Strategy and Guidance]. Explore the body of international law that guides and informs mine action.
