SRSG Souef concludes his mission on first contacts with national authorities in N’Djamena (Chad)
Concluding a week of first contacts with Chadian authorities during a mission in N'Djamena, Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) and Head of the United Nations Office for Central Africa (UNOCA) Mohamed El-Amine Souef was received in audience by President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno. During the mission, SRSG Souef met with the Prime Minister, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Ombudsman of the Republic, the First Vice-President of the National Assembly, representatives of the diplomatic community, the Resident Coordinator and the United Nations country team.
SRSG Miroslav Jenča participates in the launch of Tolima International Coffee Fair
On 4 August, in Bogotá, SRSG and Head of the United Nations Verification Mission in Colombia Miroslav Jenča participated in the launch of Tolima’s 4th International Coffee Fair alongside Governor Adriana Matiz, National Federation of Coffee Growers CEO, and the Mayor of Chaparral. The Regional Coffee School is equipping young people with the skills to strengthen the coffee sector and promote sustainable rural development. The SRSG welcomed the initiative, which brings together peace agreement signatories, victims, farmers, and national and international buyers.
Art and Dialogue Foster Reconciliation in Colombia’s Amazon Region
On 1 August, in Agua Bonita, Caquetá, the United Nations Verification Mission in Colombia (UNVMC)accompanied the closing of Sowing the Amazon: Harvesting Peace and Reconciliation, a community initiative that strengthened local capacities on gender equality and countering stigmatization through women’s associations and educational institutions. Participants reaffirmed the importance of community engagement in advancing reconciliation, peaceful coexistence and sustainable peace through art, dialogue and shared experiences.
UNSCOL leverages UN Support for strengthening Lebanon’s State Authority and Stability
Jean Arnault, Officer-in-Charge of the Office of the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon (UNSCOL) [and Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General on the Middle East conflict and its consequences], visited southern Lebanon, where he called for enhanced international support to the Lebanese Armed Forces to help extend State authority and stability. He also met with senior Lebanese officials to discuss the implementation of Security Council resolution 1701 (2006), international support, and cooperation between Lebanon and the United Nations. Earlier in the week, he joined members of the diplomatic community in commemorating the sixth anniversary of the Beirut Port explosion, reaffirming support for truth, justice, accountability and judicial independence.
Special Representative Ruiz Massieu calls for stronger protection of civilians in Haiti
On 6 August, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Haiti and Head of the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) Carlos Ruiz Massieu underscored the urgent need to strengthen the protection of the population following the intensification of gang violence in the Plaine du Cul-de-Sac area and Cité Soleil. He called for the Gang Suppression Force to be provided with the personnel, equipment, specialized capabilities and financial resources required for its full and rapid deployment, and for strengthened operational capacities of Haitian security forces.
United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) supports electoral observation training in Somalia
This week, the United Nations Transitional Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) supported a four-day BRIDGE Electoral Observation workshop in Mogadishu for civil society representatives from Somalia's Federal Member States and Banaadir. The training strengthened participants' skills in election observation, international standards and reporting, contributing to preparations for upcoming elections
Iceland contributes to the UN Office of the Special Envoy for Syria
This week, DPPA thanks the Government of the Iceland for providing an additional ISK 13,000,000 to support a senior transitional justice expert with the United Nations Office of the Special Envoy for Syria for 12 months. The Office of the Special Envoy for Syria leads UN efforts to facilitate the Syrian-led political process under Security Council resolution 2254. The contribution supports the Office's efforts to advance transitional justice in Syria.
