USG DiCarlo meets Climate, Peace and Security advisors serving in UN political missions

USG's meeting with CPS advisors

Today at UN Headquarters, Under-Secretary-General Rosemary A. DiCarlo met with Climate, Peace and Security (CPS) Advisors serving in our political missions, including United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), United Nations Office to the African Union (UNOAU), United Nations Regional Office for Central Africa (UNOCA), United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), and the Office of the Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa (OSE-HoA).

CPS Advisors, a flagship investment of the Climate Security Mechanism, are helping translate climate-related peace and security risks into actionable political analysis, early warning and preventive engagement.

The impact is tangible across regions. In West and Central Africa, we are advancing transboundary cooperation, building regional capacity and strengthening approaches to farmer-herder dynamics, with a focus on youth and gender. In the Horn of Africa, our CPS Hub is working with IGAD on joint analysis and programming in conflict-affected areas. In Afghanistan, we are strengthening dialogue on shared water resources, including on transboundary waters. Through United Nations-African Union partnership frameworks, we support African Union leadership in translating climate, peace and security priorities into continental frameworks and national action, while amplifying African priorities in global policy processes and multilateral climate and peace efforts. Across contexts, we are working to ensure climate finance is conflict-sensitive, avoids maladaptation, is delivered effectively, and delivers peace dividends.

As USG DiCarlo noted: “Building on longstanding work on natural resources and conflict, climate-related risks are now shaping many of the contexts we engage. Integrating these dynamics into early warning, political engagement and prevention is where our Climate, Peace and Security Advisors are making a difference”.

DPPA remains committed to embedding climate, peace and security into core political work and strengthening prevention in fragile and complex settings.

We thank all Climate Security Mechanism Joint Steering Committee donor partners and the Republic of Korea for making this work possible.
