USG DiCarlo highlights the value of prevention and impact of partner support for DPPA’s work at annual donor meeting

On 16 June, the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) held its annual donor meeting at UN Headquarters. Addressing Member States, Under-Secretary-General (USG) for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo highlighted how voluntary contributions support the Department’s work in preventive diplomacy, mediation, electoral assistance and special political missions, citing examples from Afghanistan, Haiti, Libya, Sudan and Syria. USG DiCarlo warned that a third consecutive year of declining funding has forced reductions in electoral assistance, mediation capacity and preventive work, even as demand for these services continues to grow. Underscoring the importance of sustained support, she noted that “the return on investment in the Multi-Year Appeal is not always immediate, but it is tangible.”
SRSG Tetteh urges progress on Libya’s political roadmap

On 18 June, Hanna Tetteh, Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), briefed the Security Council on developments in the country. She highlighted the conclusion of the Structured Dialogue, which produced nearly 600 recommendations on governance, security, the economy, national reconciliation and human rights, describing it as one of the most comprehensive and inclusive expressions of Libyan priorities in recent years. The SRSG also reported progress in discussions on electoral arrangements while warning that misinformation, economic challenges and continued security tensions risk undermining momentum toward elections and institutional unification. Stressing the need to translate dialogue into concrete progress, she said, “The direction is known, the tools exist. What is required now is the political will to deliver.”
Special Envoy highlights detainee agreement and momentum toward political process in Yemen

On 16 June, Hans Grundberg, Special Envoy of the Secretary-General (SESG) for Yemen, briefed the Security Council on efforts to advance a political solution in Yemen. He welcomed signs of regional de-escalation and urged the parties to use the opportunity to make progress toward peace. SESG Grundberg reported continued engagement with Yemeni parties and regional and international stakeholders, including through discussions on political, security and economic issues. He also welcomed an agreement reached under UN auspices to release more than 1,600 conflict-related detainees and encouraged swift implementation. Urging the parties to capitalize on recent regional developments, he said they should “use this window of regional de-escalation to make progress towards reviving a political process that can sustainably end the conflict in Yemen.”
Peacebuilding Commission reviews São Tomé and Príncipe’s conflict prevention efforts

On 12 June 2026, the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) held an ambassadorial-level meeting on São Tomé and Príncipe’s implementation of its National Conflict Prevention Strategy (2025–2029). Briefings were provided by Hon. Vera Maria Cravid, Minister of Justice, Parliamentary Affairs and Women’s Rights of São Tomé and Príncipe; Mr. Parfait Onanga-Anyanga, Special Representative of the Secretary-General to the African Union and Officer-in-Charge of the United Nations Regional Office for Central Africa; General Marcel Mapangou Moussadji, Commissioner for Peace and Security of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS); Ms. Nadia Bragança of the Association of Women Jurists; and Assistant Secretary-General for Peacebuilding and Peace Support Elizabeth Spehar. Participants discussed ongoing justice and security sector reforms aimed at strengthening institutions in the lead-up to elections. The PBC welcomed São Tomé and Príncipe’s pioneering role as the first country to present its National Conflict Prevention Strategy to the Commission and to return for a progress update.
Secretary-General calls for stronger international support during Haiti visit

On 16 June, António Guterres visited Haiti in solidarity with the Haitian people and to assess the country’s security, humanitarian and political challenges. During the visit, he met with people affected by violence and reviewed efforts by national authorities and the international community to restore stability. Highlighting the scale of the crisis, the Secretary-General called for stronger international engagement, including support for security, humanitarian assistance and the political transition. Stressing the urgency of action, he said, “Haiti is not asking for charity. Haiti is asking the world to keep its promises.”
First-time voter awareness campaign reaches Haiti

In Cap-Haïtien, on Haiti's north coast, national authorities, electoral institutions and civil society organizations, with support from the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH), conducted voter awareness and training activities for young people and women preparing to vote for the first time. The initiative highlighted the importance of broad participation in building an inclusive, transparent and representative electoral process. In line with its mandate, BINUH reaffirmed its commitment to supporting national efforts to organize credible elections, advance the political process and contribute to the restoration of democratic institutions in Haiti.
SRSG Imnadze advances regional cooperation and dialogue in Central Asia

On 15 June, Kaha Imnadze, SRSG and Head of the United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA), participated in the Eighth Meeting of Special Representatives and Envoys of the European Union and Central Asian countries on Afghanistan in Almaty. Discussions focused on developments in Afghanistan and their implications for regional security and prosperity. In his remarks, Mr. Imnadze highlighted concerns related to border security, terrorism, drug trafficking and the rights of minorities, women and girls, while underscoring the importance of Afghanistan’s integration into regional economic development processes.

On 17 June, Mr. Imnadze also participated in a High-Level Roundtable of Executive Structures of Regional Organizations in Asia in Astana. Discussions focused on the role of regional organizations in promoting dialogue, trust and cooperation. He highlighted the importance of cooperation between the United Nations and regional organizations in support of preventive diplomacy, peace and security.
Reincorporation initiative supports sustainable livelihoods in Cauca

On 16 June, the United Nations Verification Mission in Colombia (UNVMC) accompanied the signing of an implementation agreement for the sustainability strategy of El Guadual Farm, a pig-farming initiative led by peace signatories from the Tóez Indigenous Reserve in Caloto, Cauca. Supported by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and Colombia’s Agency for Reincorporation and Normalization (ARN), the project promotes economic and social reintegration through technical assistance, productive inputs and market access. The initiative highlights the role of partnerships among peace signatories, Indigenous communities and institutions in supporting sustainable livelihoods and confidence in peace implementation.
Training program supports civic participation and reintegration in Antioquia

On 17 June, the UNVMC accompanied the graduation of 30 peace signatories from the Urabá-Darién region who completed a course on citizen participation, advocacy and social oversight in Mutatá, Antioquia. Delivered through the Political Training School of the University of Antioquia and the Agency for Reincorporation and Normalization (ARN), the programme strengthened participants’ capacities to engage in democratic processes, exercise civic leadership and contribute to peacebuilding and local development in their communities.
ExpoFusa 2026 showcases peacebuilding and reintegration initiatives

On 12 June, the UNVMC participated in ExpoFusa 2026, the largest agricultural fair in Fusagasugá, Cundinamarca, featuring its Pathways Colombia virtual reality experience. The event highlighted peacebuilding initiatives, including the Agency for Reincorporation and Normalization’s campaign to combat stigmatization and productive projects led by peace signatories. Through networking facilitated by the Mission, participating initiatives established contacts with local businesses and explored new commercial partnerships to support their long-term sustainability and reintegration efforts.
Security Council extends UNAMA mandate until June 2027

On 17 June, the Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 2822 (2026), extending the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) for one year. The resolution reaffirms the Mission’s role in supporting the Afghan people, promoting peace and stability, coordinating international engagement, and advancing human rights and humanitarian efforts in Afghanistan.

United Nations marks 20 years of peacebuilding with inaugural Peacebuilding Week
From 22 to 26 June, the United Nations will commemorate the first-ever Peacebuilding Week under the theme “UN Peacebuilding @20 – Partnerships for Innovation, Inclusion and Impact.” Marking 20 years since the establishment of the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission and the Secretary-General’s Peacebuilding Fund, the week will bring together peacebuilders from across and beyond the UN system to reflect on lessons learned and discuss responses to today’s peacebuilding and prevention challenges.
On Monday, the Security Council is expected to hold briefings on Ukraine and Syria. On Friday, the Council is scheduled to discuss developments related to the sanctions regime on Sudan.
