Mine action is cross cutting and well-coordinated sector. Every five years, these entities develop and endorse a practical UN Strategy for mine action work.

The new United Nations Mine Action Strategy 2019 - 2023, launched in January, emphasizes the importance of mine action for protection, prevention and peace sustainment. The five strategic objectives respond to context-specific needs and ensure that people remain at the centre of mine action initiatives.

The strategy highlights the needs and priorities of all people affected by explosive hazards, mainstreams gender and empowers youth, and is based on a mission to realize the 2030 Agenda.

On Thursday, 4 April, the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, an assortment of these UN entities participated in a panel discussion at UNHQ. They described the linkages between their entity, the new Mine Action Strategy, and the Sustainable Development Goals.
